Over the past few years, I’ve launched and managed a few dozen social media accounts. My most successful accounts all have a few things in common: simplicity, quality content and an engaged audience. There’s a ton of noise on social media and if you’re not careful, you’ll quickly become apart of the clutter. It’s not easy but the key to succeeding on social is to connect with the right people and build an engaged community.
Here are my 5 tips for building a digital community via social media.
1. Choose Your Platforms Wisely
So you’ve just finished scribbling down your new business idea on a napkin and you’ve come up with the perfect name. Naturally, the next step is to head to all of the major social networks and secure your gold. Not so fast.
I know it’s tempting but you don’t have to conquer every social network at once. Instead, you should take a minute to think what you want to say and to who. Once you’ve identified your audience, you can figure out where they hang out online. Your next goal should be creating native content for each account. Every platform serves a different purpose and your content should do the same if you want to win on these networks. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re only managing two or three networks instead of five or six.
2. Tell A Story
Hold it! Before you start tweeting and facebooking the link to your new store, book or business you may want to hear this: no one cares. I know, it sucks. You worked so hard building your website but your mom and cousins are the only people liking and sharing your work.
Before you start asking people to buy your product, you have to make them care. The best way to do this is to tell your story in a way that connects with your audience. Gary Vaynerchuk puts it best,
“Great marketing is all about telling your story in such a way that it compels people to buy what you are selling.”
3. Build Targeted Audiences
It’s no secret that Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are making it harder for brands to reach audiences organically. The good news is, a few bucks still go a long way. The key is to research and build targeted audiences for your ads and promoted posts. You want to make sure you’re always showing your content to the right people.
4. Use The Right Hashtags
If you don’t have a budget for social yet, using the right hashtags can boost your possibilities of appearing in your customer’s feed. Just don’t overdo it- especially on Twitter. The last thing anyone wants to see is a #tweet #full #of #hashtags. If you need help finding related hashtags, apps like Hashtagger are super helpful.
5. Don’t Overwhelm Yourself
Social media can be intense. Everywhere you turn there’s a new article, including this one, telling you what you should and shouldn’t be doing. The truth is, it takes time to figure out what works for your audience so don’t kill yourself trying to follow all of the best practices. Remember to have fun! At the end of the day, social media is all about really connecting with your audience.
